Chapter IX

KING GEORGE SAT ON the throne in the great hall of the castle in Ireland. He stared down at his youngest son Adam. He, and Queen Ann with their sons George with his wife, and Henry with his wife had traveled to Ireland for the wedding.

“This is incredible” the King said in disbelief! Leaning forward he continued “I told you not to lock up any more of my emissaries, and what do I find when I arrive my emissaries in the dungeon“

Governor Clay, and his family immediately began to yell protesting they had been locked up, and had no freedom, their money stolen, and starved.

“Quiet” the King demanded, glaring at them. He turned back towards Adam.

“The Governor was unhappy with the living arrangements, since I gave the Governors room to Katherine. They demanded more room so I allowed them to stay in the dungeon. The gates were not locked. They could come and go as they pleased.”

Adam was scared and tried to keep his voice level without showing any emotion.

“You allowed, am I hearing that correctly, you allowed the Governor, and his family to stay in the dungeon?”

Adam looked directly at his Father then looked down, took a deep breath, looked at his Father again, and continued. “I didn’t know where else to put them” Adam said quietly knowing he was in trouble, and his Father was not pleased.

Suddenly Mrs. Clay stepped forward shrieking “we could have stayed in our own room, and that Irish trash could have slept in the barn with the other animals!”

Katherine immediately began yelling at Mrs. Clay in her native tongue. Adam, now angry, also begins yelling at Her, and Governor Clay, as the Means family were yelling, and talking at once.

“Quiet, Quiet, I demand quiet in here” the King stood, and roared in a loud voice with authority. He looked directly at Mrs. Clay “be careful how you speak to my future daughter-in-law, She will be Queen!” The room was quiet as the King stood in front of the engraved throne. He shook his head then sat down in deep thought as silence was maintained. He drew a deep breath, and said “send for Gilbert.”

No one in the great room dared to breathe loudly as the minutes ticked by slowly, and the uncomfortable silence became almost unbearable. A man who was disheveled with thinning gray hair walked into the great hall. He went straight to the throne and knelt before the King.

“What have you found, bookkeeper” the King asked in a level voice with no emotion?

Gilbert stood up holding two large volumes, handed them to the King, and taking a deep breath said “My lord I have examined the treasury books at your request, and found the taxes collected have been collected with the proper amount sent to your kingdom as required.”

“As I have said, the King has not been cheated” Governor Clay said with confidence. The King turned and stared at the fat Governor leaning forward and said “speak out of turn again and I will have your tongue removed.
